I recognise the remarkable life of Judith Eleanor “Judy” Waring Rorden, whose lifelong commitment to nursing, education and community service left an enduring legacy in Australia and beyond.

A highly accomplished public health nurse, Judy brought her expertise to Australia in the early 1970s and became a driving force in the development of community health services in NSW.

Alongside colleagues, she helped establish 21 community health centres across the Illawarra, improving access to healthcare and health education for thousands of people, including those in remote rural communities. Her pioneering work led to the publication of several influential nursing textbooks that helped shape community health practice for future generations.

Returning to the Far South Coast, Judy became a much-loved member of the Tura Beach and Merimbula communities. Through her craft store, Pins N Needles, she shared her knowledge, encouraged creativity and built lasting friendships. Whether offering knitting or sewing advice, hosting neighbourhood gatherings or welcoming visitors, Judy enriched the lives of those around her.

Judy’s compassion, intellect and generosity will be remembered with deep gratitude. Her legacy lives on through the communities she strengthened, the nurses she inspired, and the many people fortunate enough to know her.
