Bega resident Dorothy Chapman has dedicated 25 years of volunteer service to the Salvation Army in Bega, making a lasting contribution to the local community.

Throughout that time, Dorothy, known as Dotty, has played the vital role as an Emergency Relief volunteer, providing practical support and compassion to those facing hardship across the region.

During the Black Summer bushfires, Dorothy’s commitment was especially evident. She worked tirelessly to organise staff and volunteers, coordinate support efforts, and ensure those affected had access to food and assistance, including running community barbecues during an incredibly challenging time.

Dorothy is widely respected within the community, particularly among local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, where she has built strong, trusting relationships over many years. Her work has always been guided by care, respect and a genuine desire to help others.

Dorothy’s life has also been marked by personal loss. Her first husband, a respected local Indigenous man, sadly passed away from cancer. More recently, her long-time partner Roody also passed away after a battle with cancer.

Despite these hardships, Dorothy continues to give generously of her time and energy, embodying the true spirit of community service and resilience.
